How Soldiers with PTSD Benefit from DHEA Supplements
Mental Health Implications
Christine Cadena, Yahoo! Contributor Network

A steroidal based natural hormone, known as DHEA, is a vital part of our physiological makeup and is what helps our bodies to natural fight stress and infection over time. When subjected to traumatic events, such as events of war and the effects of PTSD, many soldiers are experiencing depletion of DHEA in their systems and need supplementation to help in fighting the long term effects of post-traumatic stress disorder.
Within our bodies, the adrenal glands play a vital role in helping us to overcome stress and fight infection. When our bodies are placed under great amounts of stress, the adrenal glands become suppressed and unable to effectively do their job. Because DHEA is secreted from the adrenals, when this same stress adversely suppresses the adrenals, DHEA can fall short in supply within our bodies and, ultimately, we can not fight stress or infections as we once did.
If you are caring for a loved one who has developed PTSD after returning home from war, or some other military related event, you may want to consider offering supplementation in their diet by using DHEA. While traditional medicine, including antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, and even therapy are also quite effective for treating PTSD, there is an added benefit to DHEA natural supplements.
Once supplemented by DHEA, a person who is living with post-traumatic stress disorder will often find there is an improved sense of well being emotionally. Becoming better equipped to face stress and other mental health complications, DHEA supplements boost the circulation of DHEA within the body and provide for a steroid-based hormone that will help to improve overall immunity and even improve sex drive. Also, by supplementing with DHEA, the stress and pressure that is placed on the adrenals, to supply DHEA at increased levels, is removed and then the adrenals can recover from adrenal fatigue which is common among veterans with PTSD.
Before considering the use of DHEA, it is important to speak with a healthcare provider about the use and contraindications associated with other medications that may be used for PTSD. In most cases, however, there are few side effects, very low risks, and great benefits as this is simply a supplementation of a natural hormone that has been depleted following the experience of a traumatic event and the development of PTSD. In the long term, DHEA may provide the key advantage to overcoming post-traumatic stress disorder in many soldiers who are returning home from tours and events associated with times of war.
